It’s watermelon season finally! We are more than excited because this family is “1 huge watermelon a day” kinda family. We go through a lot of this green and red goodness.
But after eating a watermelon, there is so much beautiful rind left that I always feel bad throwing it away.
Today was the day, and we decided to…..
After a refreshing watermelon snack we started cutting up the watermelon rind for the compost bin which is going to our chicken coop. As I was cutting the watermelon slices into small pieces kids grabbed them and start stacking them up, trying to make different ‘sculptures’. Then they said: “if only they would stick to each other…”
Ding Ding! That’s what mama needed.
I stood up, got wooden kebob sticks and tooth picks. The the rest is … in the pictures.
How to build a watermelon house
You will need:
- watermelon rind
- some tooth picks or wooden kebob sticks
What to do:
- Cut watermelon in half.
- Eat it.
- Use spoon to scoop all the “meat” out.
- Use 1/4 of the watermelon for the “house”
- Cut up other half in different shapes: squares, triangles and circles
- Build chairs, couches, tables, baby cribs and many more furniture from watermelon pieces by attaching them with the tooth pick.
Here is what our furniture designers created
Modern style couch “a la Europa”
3-Piece Breakfast Table Set in Watermelon Green
It was supposed to be a crib. You decide. 🙂
I did have to help kids a little, by cutting up the watermelon pieces and sometimes sticking those sticks in them. But the idea and creative part was left for the young and charming designers.
And what a wonderful pretend play they had afterwards. However, keep in mind that this ‘furniture’ will dry and will not look as good after 1 day.
Honestly, not only I never thought I would write a post about watermelon craft, I see MORE miniature watermelon play in a very near future. Keep checking on us, eating watermelon and saving the rind.
In case you are new here you should know that we love creating stuff that’s usually on the way to the garbage bin. Check out more similar projects we did.
